The New Look of Baba Bullay Shah(بابا بلھے شاہ رح) Shrine

Baba Bullay Shah RA is one of the early but eminent Sufi souls of sub continent. His complete history can be read here. I would be going direct to the  new look of his shrine. Auqaaf (Government department working for the shrines in Pakistan ) and the private donors have been able to construct a world class mosque and shrine of Baba Bullay Shah RA.

Newly Constructed Mosque besides Shrine
Inside the shrine Sufi Sajjad Naqeebi and M Imtiaz Naqeebi

At foot steps of shrine.

To be noted that shrine of Baba Bullay Shah is situated in Kasur, Punjab, Pakistan. When ever I am going through something strange, I head towards Kasur, where I do go here. This is worth visiting shrine. Do not forget to whisper "Teray Ishq nachaya kr k thayya thayya" in the lobby of shrine. This is a feeling too which can just be experienced there....

PIYA RANG KALA (پیا رنگ کالا) : A Worth Reading Travelogue

Yesterday I was suffering from flu and sour throat so I had to quit my office at 2pm sharp. There was nothing left to kill the time. Perhaps this is the time when inner self of you makes things a bit nostalgic. Lying on bed, listening old Saraiki music brought me to the loneliness of nature and barren traits of my self where I could find peace. This brought me to Piya Rang Kala.

Although two of my friends Jia and Ali Arfat had already recommended this book to me but couldn't get time to read. This was the ideal time to go for it and I took the chance.

Starting this book was the moment I remember, but what all I came across after words, I don't. This is something bewitching about this book. I am not some literary tycoon, so I can't comment about literary aspects of this book. The only thing I can comment is the bewitching rhyme of this book which ended when I finished it late night.
Cover Page of Piya Rang kala by Baba Yahya

I was not knowing that Baba Yahya has written it as his biography. But it brought me to a point where I had to accept it as his biography. This is a travelogue of his spiritual evolution. A book of it's kind which lets it's readers come across a streamlined aspect of their spiritual traits, making things positive for some greater good, letting readers lost in the extra-ordinary story of and ordinary boy who is struggling hard to get into the factual aspects of nature.

Baba Yahya is one of the spiritual tycoons of the world. He carries no formal education but still blessed with the ultimate streams of factual nature. In other words, he carries knowledge of it's kind which is never found in book. It is learnt via observations, evolutes via some mentor and breaks the factual limitations of the materialistic world. I must congratulate Baba Yahya for writing such an artistic note of spiritual evolution. I must thank Jia and Ali Arfat too for recommending such a nice book to me.

In the end, I would say that Baba Yahya has written worth reading notes. But this is not for all readers. Only readers of it's kind can get something from it.

Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai : Life and Teachings

Sindh has always been one of the favourite place for the sufi and pious people. It is famous for its culture, sufi poetry and the truth and sincerity the sindhi people have got inside their hearts and this sincerity originates from the poetry and teachings of sufi people like Hazrat Laal Shahbaz Qalander and Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai.

This week the Urs of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai is being celebrated with zeal and zest. Devotees from all over the Pakistan  come to attend this religious celebration and to enrich their hearts and minds with the sincere teachings and poetry of love of these sufi poets like Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai (RA). Here is a brief biography of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai (RA).

He was born in 1689 at a village called Hala Havelli near Hyderabad, Sindh. Shah Abdul Latif’ was the direct descendent of the Prophet Muhammad through Imam Zain-ul-Abideen, son of Imam Husayn. Shah's father, Syed Habib Shah had migrated from Matyaru, Afghanistan to Sindh.

When he was young, he fell in love with the daughter of the village’s landlord. The landlord however, turned against him and tried his best to harass his family. After that Shah Latif, left his home became a spiritual wanderer.

In the quest of eternal love, he traveled in many parts of Sindh and adjoining lands where he met Sufis and Yogis. He spent three years in the company of these Sadhus.

Finally, when he arrived in Thatta, he met a Sufi saint Makhdoom Muhammad Moin. He understood the inner condition of Shah Latif, and held him there for a few days. He then told him, "The truth, for which you are wandering around, is inside of yourself. A man is a mirror for a man. You've seen God's manifestation in the hand of that girl." After a few days living with that Sufi saint, Shah Latif felt inner satisfaction and then he left for Hala.
By the time he returned to Hala, the landlord had already died he married the love of his life Bibi Saidha Begum who died within a few years of their marriage and he never married again.

After her death, he would often seek solitude and spend most of his time in contemplation and Muraqaba (Sufi meditation) and writing poetry.

He lived a very simple life. His food was simple as well as his dress, which was often of saffron color, the color of the dress of Sufis or Yogis, stitched with a black thread.

For the last eight years of his life, he lived at Bhitshah, a small village built by him. A few days before his death, he retired to his underground room and spent all his time in prayers and fasting, eating very little. The great Sufi poet died in 1752 was buried at the same place where a shrine now stands. In 1866, 114 years after the poet's death, a German scholar Ernest Trump compiled Risalo, a complete collection of Shah Abdul Latif's poetry,

Aziz Mian Qawwal: A person who was a qawwal, artist, poet, and above all a Philosopher .

Aziz Mian was born as Abdul Aziz (Urdu: عبد العزیز) on April 17, 1942 in Delhi, British India. The exclamation, Mian (Urdu: میاں), which he often used in his Qawwalis, became part of his stage name. He began to introduce himself as Aziz Mian Mairthi. The word Mairthi refers to Mairath, a town in India, from which he migrated to Pakistan in 1947.

At the age of ten, he began learning the art of Qawwali under the tutelage of Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan. He received sixteen years of training at the Data Ganj Baksh School of Lahore. Aziz Mian obtained M.S. degrees in Arabic, Persian, Persian literature, Urdu literature, and History from the University of Punjab, Lahore.

Aziz Mian was one of the more traditional Pakistani Qawwals. His voice was raspy and powerful, yet this was not the sole reason for his success. Aziz Mian was not only a master musician but was also the only prominent Qawwal to write his own lyrics (though, like others, he also performed songs written by other poets).

Aziz Mian's break-out performance was in 1966, when he performed before the Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi. He won first prize and a gold medal from the Shah of Iran. In the early days of his career, he was nicknamed Fauji Qawwal (Urdu: فوجی قوال) (meaning "Military Qawwal") because most of his early stage-performances were in military barracks for army personnel.

He was arrested multiple times on minor charges but was vindicated.

Aziz Mian's Qawwalis emphasised on chorus and on the main point of the Qawwali through repetition; very little attention was paid to the musical part of the Qawwali. Aziz Mian had a talent for reciting poetry to the effect that it touched the audience's hearts. He brought passion to his live performances. One of the trademarks of his stage performances was his habit of rising to his knees (from the normal sitting position) while reciting poetry in the middle of a Qawwali, losing contact with the microphone in the process.

Although Aziz Mian mainly sang religious Qawwalis, he had some success in the romantic field. Some of Aziz Mian's most famous Qawwalis are Main Sharabi Sharabi , Teri Soorat, Allah Hi Jaane Kaun Bashar Hai, and Ya Nabi. For his service in philosophy and music, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance medal in 1989.

He was fond of discussing religious and Sufi paradoxes in his Qawwalis. He directly addressed Allah and complained about the misery of man (the greatest creation of the Almighty). Most of the poetry in which Aziz Mian addressed Allah was written by Allama Iqbal. He also has performed poetry by a number of contemporary Urdu poets, including Sadiq and Qateel Shifai. Pakistani comedian Umar Sharif has said in one of his stand-up shows about Aziz Mian: "Other people have disputes on earth, his disputes are in heaven. He altercates with Allah.

Today i.e. 6th Dec 2000 was a dark day when this great philosopher passed away in Tehran, a city of Iran. His dead body was taken to Multan where he was burried according to his will in the graveyard of Nau Bahar Canal. At this place a dervish used to sit and Aziz Mian used to come every year to perform just for this dervish. In 1999, he said while performing here" Next year we will be listening and some others will be performing here." Astonishing but true that next year, his sons and other Qawwals of Pakistan performed in the Holy month of Ramzan at his grave where that dervish used to sit. My elder brother was also there in that last historic performance of Aziz Mian, May his soul rest in heavens......... Ameen.

Attack on Shrine of Hazrat Baba Fareed Ganj Shakar (RA)

After Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (RA) and Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA), now it was the shrine of Hazrat Baba Fareed Ganj Shakar (RA) when on monday morning after the fajr prayer, it was 2 motorcyclists who put a small milk container which blasted after a few moments killing atleast six and injuring around 13.

Atleast 13 people who are reported injured who have been shifted to district headquarters hospital. A row of shops have been damaged but the shrine which is believed to be built in thirteenth century almost unddamaged. The blast was remote controlled and atleast 10kg of explosives was used un it.

The terrorists are now aiming the sufi stream of islam because they have been made fail by Pakistan Army and other sects that they can not impose their barbaric terms and treditions on an islamic democratic nation. Goverment was supposed to take very serious steps after attacks on the shrine of Hazrat Data GanjBakh (RA) in Lahore and Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (ra) but it failed and provided terrorists a chance for their activities. This is alarming for the people related to Governament and Security. It is because if they fail in providing security, then they will loose their spiritual support which will result in drastic changes at political scenario and all other fields of governance.

A convention by All pakistan Sunni Council was arranged in Jinnah Convention centre Islamabad after the
attacks on shrine of Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi in which it was decided to ensure the security of all shrines and sacred places of all Sects of islam. But this attack shows that these have not been able to take their demands to the Governament or a failure at any other step.

Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA)

One of the greatest saints of Sindh is Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA).He belongs to 4th generation of Hazrat Ali (AS), the 4th caliph of Islam and son in law of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). He migrated from Arb to Sindh only for the great cause of Islam.

He was born in 720 AD in Madina and moved to Sindh in 760AD as a merchant. He brought a large number of horses with him. He was given a great respect because he belonged to "Sadaat Family" the most noble family in Islam. He started living here and continued the great mission of Islam.

At that time, the family of Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (RA) had started a movement for the revival of Caliphate, the most noble way of governance in Islam. He brother got martyred just because of this movement. The ruler of the time wrote to the governor of Sidh to arrest Hazrat Abdullah Shah FGhazi (RA) and send him back to capital where a trial could be built against him But it was a blessing from Allah that governor of Sindh was a follower of Hazrat Abdullah (RA) and postponed the orders many times. At the end he sent him as a noble guest to the nearby Raja who was under the governor. Hazrat Abdullah (RA) remainded there for 4 years.

He continued his great mission of Islam everywhere he remained. A large number of people embrassed Islam on his hands. Besides a scholar of Islam he was a great saint.

One day when he was out for hunt with his followers, the ruler of that time took them as some army of nearby enemy. They told them about their identity but he did not accept their argument and ordered to attack. They took the fight like men of Islam and got martyred one by one. He was burried on a hill top in Krachi.  This was year 713 AD.

Every day, near about sunset, a steady stream of devotees crawls towards a green dome. Their destination is a grave draped in flowers. All wish to touch it but the marble railing comes their way. Not to feel belittled, they step back; sit cross-legged with head down and recite verses from Holy Quran. Soon the place would become congested and the Khadims  would persuade some in deep slumber to move out to make way for others.

There are separate sitting arrangements for men and women but all mumble their secret wishes to the saint. Desperate women, under threat of divorce, pray for a son. Some are seeking good fortune, some pleading for the health of their loved-one. Drug addicts ask for forgiveness and an opportunity to live a normal life. This is an unusual crowd. Parents have their children with them and persuading them to ask the saint for high marks in the next examination. The young ones raise their tiny hands for blessing of the Sufi Saint.

At first, it looks as if the devotees are from the city or nearby places. But a closure look would reveal some un-common faces. Jan Muhammed has come all the way from a far off city, Rahim Yar Khan. He has his wife and three kids with him. He proudly disclosed: “We come here for Ziarat, not every year but when we can. We wish we could afford to come each year,” Ms Saima Khan, from another distant place, Quetta, a mother with two children, visits the Mausoleum annually. “We come for Manat and to seek solutions for our problems.”

Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh(RA)

Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh is the most luminous figure of our history. While Muslim warriors conquered these parts of the sub-continent by force, the Muslim Saints identified themselves with the people, and interpreted Islam to them as a rational approach to better life in this world and hereafter. The people were not converted to Islam under any pressure of the armed forces; they accepted Islam voluntarily because of the appeal of the message of Islam as conveyed and preached by Muslim missionaries.
By common consent Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh is a great Saint of the sub-continent. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was born in Ghazni, a small place in Afghanistan. Located at a higher altitude it is a cool place in summer. The winter is windy and cold. When Ghaznavids were in power, this town was known for its grandeur as it happened to be the capital of their empire. It is said, it is contemporary to Harrappan and Indus valley civilization. It was the centre of trade with “Khurasan” and Sindh. It was a medieval walled city with expensions of areas called “Mohallahs” developed outside the walled city. Two of these Mohallahs were known as “Hujwer” and “Jalab”. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh’s, family lived in the locality of Hujwer. In his book Kashful Mahjub he cateforically prayed for Ghazno “becoming the abode of Saints and venerable men”. Many books mention 400 A.H. or 1000 AD as date of birth but some writers by analysing the contemporary historical events argue it to be 1002 AD. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was a Hasani Syed i.e. a descendent of Hazrat Ali. Generally recorded is Ali Hujweri s/o Muhmmad Usman s/o Abul Hasan ali, who was son of Abdur Rehman s/o Shah Shuja s/o Abul Hassan Ali s/o Asghar s/o Daud s/o Imam Hasan who was son of Hazrat Ali. Those of ‘Alids’ who survived at Karbala sought refuge in distant lands. (There is a narration that some survivors of the tragedy came to lahore and among them Bibi Rukayya, the chaste lady, whose tomb is revered as Bibi Pak Daman). Some question this, but dispersal after tragedy of Karbala is confirmed. Among them were the forefathers of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh, apparently an affluent family, with a religious devotion, piety and learning. Being in Iran, the family of Data Ganj Bakhsh was largely Iranised. They had married Iranian Woman. In the deviation of writing the book Kashful Mahjub in persian, instead of Arabic, is evidence that the spoken language of the family was persian. May be his mother was also an Iranian.
The original name of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was Abul Hasan Ali when he came to be known as Saint, he was surnamed ‘Data Ganj Bakhsh’ because of his generosity. In Kashful Mahjub, Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh has referred to himself as Ali Bin Usman-bin-Ali-al-Jallaby-al- Ghazanvi-al-Hujweri. He was named after his grandfather. Hazrat Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, Muinudin Chisti, the celebrated Saint of Ajmer, meditated at the tomb of Hazrat Ganj Bakhsh. After a period of forty days, he was, it is said, greatly affected by the graces showered upon him at this holy place and it was here that he got the spiritual illumination. At that moment standing at the foot of the tomb, out of respect for the great saint said:
“Ganj Bakhsh-e-faiz-e-alam, Mazhar-e-noor-e-Khuda, Naqisan-ra pir-e-Kamil, Kamilan ra Rahnuma”.

It is generally thought that from that date the Saint came to be called Ganj Bakhsh. The couplet is inscribed over the marble arch on the entry gate of the tomb. Some, however, feel that the Saint was so known even during his lifetime. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh had great and brilliant knowledge of Quran, tradition, history, jurisprudence and logic etc. that is testified by the treasure trove in the classic ‘Kashful Mahjub’. The supreme mission of the Saint was to make the people understand true Islam. He had great skill in discourses, debates and profoundness of thought. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh, as referred to in Kashful Mahjub has written seven other books these are:-
i) Minhajuddin containing account of various Sufis.
ii) Asrarul Khiraj Wal-maurat means of livehoof.
iii) Kitabi Fana-o-Baqa.
iv)Al-Hallaj.
v) Kitab-al-byan li-ahl-al-Iman.
vi) Al-riayat li Haquq Allah.
vii) A book on the subject of Faith.
Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was himself a poet. He has quoted numerous verses in Kashful Mahjub and this shows his developed taste for poetry. The Saint, it is appears from his writings, travelled extensively. The places visited include Amul in Tabaristan, Farghana, Azerbayjan, Tabrez, Baghdad, Balkh, Merv, Baward in Turkman, Damascus, Samarkand, Eygpt, Heart, Nishapur, Hijaz, Isphahan, Khurasan and Kirman etc., etc.
Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was a scholar Saint. His classic work Kashful Mahjub is scholary exposition of various subjects. A deep and thorough study leads one to discover the genius of spiritualism in the form of sayings of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh. Prof. Masud in his book on Data Ganj Bakhsh has copied and calculated 536 such ‘Aqwal’, to quote one:

According to ‘Fuwaid –ud-Fuwad’ by Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia os Delhi when Hazrat Al-Khattali asked Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh to proceed to Lahore, he expressed surprise at the order, for, Shaikh Zanjani was already there. But he was asked to follow the orders without questioning. When Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh reached Lahore, the first thing he noticed was that funeral of Hazrat Shaikh Zanjani was being taken out and Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh led the funeral prayer. It thus dawned on him why his Shaikh had asked him to proceed to Lahore. Shaikh Al-Khattali who was the Qutab of the age was a man of great spiritual vision. He must have visualised that the Seljuks were likely to rise. Islam had recently entered punjab and there was great scope of work. There is controversy among the writers about the date of arrival but it is around 1034 or 1035 AD. Two Sufi Scholars preceded Data Sahib in case of Lahore. These are Shah Hussain Zanjani and Shah Ismail. Shah Hussain Zanjani died in 1034 and his tomb is in Chah Miran. Shah Ismail died around 1048 and his tomb is on the Hall Road.
According to Syed Muhammad Latif and Tahqiqat-e-Chishti one of the first persons to become Muslim at the hands of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was Rai Raju, who was the Naib Hakim of Lahore. On conversion to Islam, he was named Shaikh Hindi by Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh. There is likelihood that under the influence of Rai Raju many others vonverted to Islam.
There were large conversions in the area of Bhati Gate which had been named as Hujweri Gate. On complaint, the ruler, Sultan Masud referred the leader Jai Singh and other Hindus to Data Sahib where they all embraced Islam on forceful eloquent and convincing arguments of Data Sahib. Data Sahib alsodecided that the name of the Gate might neither be Hujweri Gate nor Jai Singh and instead be called Bhati Gate as before.
Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh acquired great fame and came to be recognized as the Qutab-ul-Aqtab. He had during this period many disciples who came to him for religious instructions. He had ‘Khanqah’ and a a Mosque in his lifetime. This Mosque was re-built in 1279. It was damaged later, around late 1960s during an earthquake. It is said that when originally being built some of the locals pointed out that the ‘Qibla’ of the Mosque was not exactly in the western direction and appeared towards north. On learning the objection the Holy Saint himself one day led the prayer and after that asked the people who had objected to see if the ‘“Qibla”’ was wrongly placed. When they saw they found it directly in line with the Holy Kaaba. It was the 1st ‘Karamat’ of the saint. As already mentioned the most important of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was Kashful Mahjub. The book took quite sometime to finish and he summed up his spiritual experiences in the same. This was also the first work on Sufism written in Persain. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh was also a scholar of Arabic but to communicate easily with his readers, he wrote it in Persian. This book was translate into English by Prof. R. A. Nicholson. He was Professor of Arabic and sometimes lecturer in Persian at the University of Cambridge. The 1st English edition appeared in 1911, second in the year 1936 and yet another in 1959. In the introduction Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh noted that the book was written in answer to some issue raised by Hazrat Abu Saeed Hujweri in regard to Sufism. The book seeks to explain divine systeries, way of truth and stages of Sufism which one covers in his communication and effort to reach the Creator.

The Khanqah came into existence, when infact Hazrat Data Sahib came to stay in Lahore. It was on a mound west of Bhati Gate. A mosque had also been raised by the Saint alongwith Khanqah known as “Khishti Masjit”. The Mausoleum of the Holy Saint, according to Tehqiqat-e-Chishti was constructed by Sultan Ibrahim a successor of Masud Ghazanvi, the son of Mahmood Ghazanvi, in whose time the Holy Saint came to Lahore. According to Syed Muhammad Latif’s History of Lahore “Having lived for thirty four years in Lahore, during which time he conferred great benefits on the prople by his learning and piety, he died in 465 A.H. (1072 AD) and was buried close to a mosque which he had himself suilt. The Mausoleum was constructed by Sultan Ibrahim. Maulana Jami, in his book ‘Nafaht-ul-Ans’ and Dara Shikoh his ‘Safina-tul-Aulia’, speak in high terms of accomplishments of Data Ganj Bakhsh as a religious preceptor and from the times of Ghazanvids being upto the present day his memory has been held in the greatest veneration by all classes of prople. He was a great author of his time. A fair is held at the tomb each Friday, which is largely attended by Muslims and Hindus. These days while generally there is always an atmosphere of fair on all the week days, on Thursday there is much more number of the faithfuls. This scribe saw people from all communities at the tomb including Sikhs, Christians and Parsis. While the donations and nazranas normally come to lacs even in the surrounding bazars there is always a hawker like loud invitation “Is there anyone in need of food”? One of the Mausoleum arches contains the word 465 A.H. The mausoleum of the saint is in a square shape encircled by seven arches on each side with an outer Verandah and an inner circle of same number of arches i.e. 28x7 on each side. The grave in the tomb itself is on a raised platform. One has to climb 3 steps to enter. The tomb has a gate and three openable windows. All the arches, pillars, window frames are in carved marble. The entire floor is also in marble. The entrances on the eastern side were re-built by Auqaf Department with two big entrance doors, one for ladies and the other for gents.
On the south there are again two main doors where people leave the footwear. The Shah of Iran donated one of these doors which was Iranian “Gold in-lay”. The original mosque which was built by Hazrat Data Sahib was re-built by Sultan Ibrahim, repaired and was finally demolished in nineteen hundred sisties.

According to Syed Latif, the floor of the entrance to the Mausoleum and the door frames as well as platforms on the right and left was built bythe Mughal Emperors. Ranjit Singh himself later came to hold the shrine in great reverenc and made mayn offerings. He contributed Rs. 1000 on the occasion of each Urs of the Holy Saint. Maharani Chand Kaur wife of Maharaja Kharak Singh built a vaulted chamber in the Mausoleum whree Holy Quran is recited day and night. Other contructions on the perphery of the shrine appear to have b een raided by devotees of the Saint. There other royal gifts given to the Shrine from time to time were wells and villages in the vicinity of the Khanqah which were made. It also appears from Tahqiqat-e-Chishtai that a well called Muhammad Khan Tangsalwala, which was then near the Medical College was given as Nazr to the Khanqah by Ranjit Singh, who had also given as ‘Nazr’ two or four other wells. These were during the construction of the cantonment of Anarkali taken over by the British, but in lieu thereof the British gave five times the area of land taken over on the other side of the River Ravi. Originally this land was also Muafi but later on the British withdrew the exemption due to the non-cooperation of the Zamindars. The proper mausoleum is a fine specimen of marble workmanship. As already mentioned, the ‘Khishti’ Mosque or the Mosque in brick came down during late sixties due to an earthquake. The Mosque has now been shifted from its original place towards further west. A magnificent arched, concrete structure in Turkish architectural style has been raised im blue tiles with two high cone style minarets which are gold plated. The mosque has a vast area underground where “Langar cooking” goes on. The offices of the management of the Auqaf and some parking areas are also there. A couple of years back under directions of the Government to extend the premises and provide more space to the faithful and visitors, the Government has acquired the entire area east of Darbar. Which included private quarters and the area under occupation of Islamia High School, Bhati Gate. Now the main entrances to the Darber will infact start from the Circular Road. A vast underground area has been provided. The construction work remained suspended till recently and under directions of the Prime Minister nawaz Sharif now the work has again been resumed. All the arches on the 1st floor in the eastern block with under ground construction complete, which extends over a vast area, are exactly of the same style as those of marble on the mausoleum. With the accomplishment of this project a lot of apace would become available for visitors. The mosque also having taken a bit of the shrine sufficien space for prayers and those in waiting has become available. The earlier construction of boundary, big gates of Langar Khana, and ablution place have been demolished.
The Saint is highly popular with people and whenever one visits, one finds a large number of people praying, reciting Quran and invoking blessings of the great Saint. According to Syed Latif, Dara Shikoh has written in his book that any person who visits the Mausoleum every Thursday, for forty days consecutively, his wishes are fulfilled. The death anniversary of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh is celebrated on 18th of Safar each year. On Muharram the Mausoleum is given ‘Ghusal”. The Mausoleum, to conclude is the spiritual centre of Lahore and it is difficult to visualize Lahore without Data Sahib. So Lahore is also called ‘Data Ki Nagri’. In the absence of much material on biography of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh, his classic Kashful Mahjub projects a living message of the Saint as a man of highly eminent stature in the domain of spiritualism. He was a Sufi, a Saint, a Scholar, a Poet, a Philosopher, a Teacher, a Muslim Missionary and an embodiment of the best in Islam.

According to a narration he had a luminous personality, tall in stature, neither thin nor fat, with and ruddy complexion. He had dense beard, penetrating eyes a harmonious and magnetic personality, verily a prince among men.
Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh held that culture really meant the collection of virtuous qualities. He defined culture as “Dwelling with praiseworthy qualities”. A man was cultured if he acted with propriety towards God in public and private. Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh held that culture was not the prerogative of any particular race, and if a person acted with propriety he was cultured wven though a non-Arab, and conversely an Arab if he acted improperly was uncultured. In the matter of culture, mere intelligence did not go very far, it had to be backed up with knowledge. He held that those who have knowledge are in very case more honoured than those who have intelligence. For him piety in word and deed was the Sine-qua, non-of culture.
The expansion of Data Darbar Complex undertaken by the Nawaz Sharif Government, on completion the project would have a three story complex consisting of a basement for parking vehicles, a Sama Hall, Musafir Khana, Toilets and Ablution site, a roof garden fountain water ripples and fibre glass domes surrounded by arcade approaching the mausoleum. In addition to the Administrative Block, Langar Khana, Quran Mahal and stores have been rebuilt adjacent to the complex.
The complex will provide entry and exit facilities to thousands of devotees from the four gates approaching from Darbar Road, and Zaildar Road in addition to the golden gate and ladies gate in the proximity of the shrine. Devotees and Philanthrophists plan to erect a golden gate at the main entrance of the complex facing Circular Road which has opened up to the East. Thousands of devotees attend the Qawwali during the Urs and for the last many years it was held at the nearby ground of the school.
The addition at the Data Darbar Complex was planned and executed in 1992 at a cost od Rs. Six Crores on the directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. After excavation of grounds and construction of parts of basement, unfortunately the scheme was abandoned by the Peoples Party Government in 1994. The Peoples Party authorities wanted to include a shopping plaza in the complex in place of a Sama Hall. The idea was, however, resisted by the Data Darbar Committee. After a period of two years, the work was resumed to the original design in 1997 under orders of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who gave the target period of one year. The total cost, however, will come to Rs. 25 crores since the preliminary construction in 1992. The project is being executed by Lahore Development Authority. Mr. Ishaq Dar, a Federal Minister has been appointed Chairman of Darbar Committee, and is looking after the construction work under strict orders of the Prime Minister. The Prime minister is being kept informed about the progress. During the last 50 years, this expansion will be the major addition which will cater to the requirements of devotees for another 50 years or so.

Signs of fake Peers(The people who are having no relation with sufism).

Some signs of fake peers which are common in todays society
He picks and chooses which to follow from shariah.

He asks for money under the pretext of using it for good purposes which in reality is for his own purposes.

He makes people whom he has trapped to swear on the Qur'an Shareef that they will continue to support him financially, whatever be the condition.

He goes further in lying about dreaming of Sayyidinah Rasoolullah Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam telling him to tell so and so to swear on the Qur'an Shareef that they will continue to give money to him to help the poor.

Despite knowing that a person is already Mureed to a Shaykh, he compells that person to take

bai'at from him and further says to the person that his peer is fake and his bai'at is null.

He shamelessly says that apart from his lineage all other Pirs are weak without sparing the Kaamil One.

He proudly boast about his blood lineage and qualifies other Shuyukh as inferior.

He lies and says that one can safely lie without condition for the sake of Islam,He also believes in reincarnation.

He enjoys the company of women.

Existence of Religion in a Modern Multi-Cultural Society:

In Iqbal,s view:

Let us trace the existence of religion in a society consisting of people belonging to various thought, having different cultural background and belonging to different religions. The question arises: ‘what is the role of religion in a person?’ According to Iqbal religion is essentially a mode of actual living and it is the only serious way of handling Reality. ‘Handling Reality’ is searching the Real - in other words ‘to understand God’. Ali, the great companion of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), said once that ‘one who understands himself can understand God’. Towards approaching the Real a Sufi adopts the way of religion. The way of a scientist is spacial i.e. relating to the world of matter. Iqbal says that a scientist is also a Sufi because he is too searching the Real. Paul Davies says that “the scientific quest is a journey into unknown”.
As for the existence of religion in an individual, everybody believes in God in one way or the other. All the great scientists of the world without any exception believe in some sort of existence of a great power which cannot be described. There are a number of scientists who believe in religion and some of them even also practice religion. There is a common view about scientist that they are materialistic persons totally devoid of religion, which is incorrect and misleading. I quote just one example of a scientist known as a non-believer person. His name is Einstein; he is the scientist who brought revolution in certain branches of science. He is usually considered as a non believer person. There is no doubt that he did not practice religion and he was not a religious person. But he had his own view about the existence of God religion. At times he looked quite aggressive toward religion which was practised by his community at that time. In that mood he once told that he should not be buried after his death but his body should be burnt and the ashes be flown in the air. He also had to quit his native country Germany due to his so called unwanted attitude. With all this he left his undying words for the time to come as he said, “Religion without science is lame and science without religion is blind”.
If religion is ‘essentially a mode of actual living’ for an individual, as earlier quoted of Iqbal, then in its broader sense the religion becomes a mode of actual living for a society. The essence of religion is ‘belief in God and in the world hereafter’. Consequently one who believes in God will abide by the commandment of God. The commandment conveyed to mankind through the medium of all religions is like this: “Thou shalt love the Lord, thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with thy entire mind, and with all thy strength”. Religion also teach us how to love God. Bible as well as the Qur’an, teach us that ‘to love God is to love fellow human beings’. God loves human beings much more than a mother loves her children, according to Qur’an. And believing in the world hereafter keeps a person on the right path. Such an individual will never commit an act harmful to the other.
The existence of religion in a society is demonstrated when its human beings are humane, and to be humane is to be compassionate towards others, it is to be kind hearted, loving and soft in dealing with others. The absence of this quality in a person amounts to lack of spirit. Søren Kierkegaard says that “Spiritlessness is the misfortune of human being”. With that he does not mean a person without spirit but he clarifies that spiritlessness is ‘stagnation of spirit’. Iqbal also believes same way when he says that “God is fed up with spiritless body; He is living God and is God of the livings.”
I quote hereunder two beautiful extracts of Iqbal from his book The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam. He writes:

  1. “Religion in its more advanced form moves from individual to society…..We have to trace the uncritical assumption of human thought to their hiding places…..The essence of religion is faith, and faith, like the bird, sees its ‘trackless way’ unattended by intellect which only waylays the living heart of man and robs it of the invisible wealth of life that lies within.” (Extracts from p.1)

“The modern world stands in need of biological renewal. And religion, which in its higher manifestations is neither dogma, nor priesthood, nor ritual, can alone ethically prepare the modern man for the burden of the great responsibility which the advancement of modern science necessarily involves, and restore to him that attitude of faith which makes him capable of winning a personality here and retaining it hereafter.” (Extracts from p.149)

Why Iqbal regarded Rumi as his Guide....

Rumi was the Persian mystic poet of Thirteenth Century. He is called Rumi because of his native place, Konya (Inconium) in Asia Minor which was then known as Rum. He was born in C.E. 1207 and died in 1273. Iqbal acknowledges Rumi as his guide without reservation. No thinker except Rumi has acquired the title of the Pir (guide) from Iqbal. He has whole heartedly paid him tribute and respect nearly in all his books. This tribute arouses much curiosity when it is paid by Iqbal, an eminent poet-philosopher with numinous vision and outstanding scholarship.

The most important factor which impressed Iqbal to acknowledge Rumi as his guide was Rumi’s interpretation of the Quran and his profound love for the Holy Book and the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).

Iqbal believes that Rumi deeply understands the spirit of the Quran. He says:

“The light of the Quran is hidden in his (Rumi’s) breast, the cup of Jam fades in the presence of his mirror”

Iqbal openly acknowledges Rumi’s Mathnavi as the Quran in Pahlvi. He says:

“There appeared the Master, formed in the mould of Truth, who wrote the Koran in Persian.”

Khawaja Hamid Irfani rightly says:

“In understanding and interpreting the Quran, Rumi is in consonance with Iqbal”.

Iqbal is very right in accepting Rumi as the great interpreter of the Quran. Even before Iqbal, Rumi commanded this status. Jami called his Mathnavi “The Quran in Persian” (Hast Quran Dar Zaban-i-Pehlvi).

Rumi’s love and regard for the Quran and the Prophet are worthy of note here. About the Quran, Rumi says:

“Though the Quran is (dictated) from the lips of the Prophet – if anyone says God did not speak it, he is an infidel”.

Again:

“To thee the Quran is even as the rod (of Moses), it swallows up (all) infidelities, like a dragon”.

About the Prophet, Rumi says:

“If Ahmad should display that glorious pinion (his spiritual nature), Gabriel would remain dumbfounded unto everlasting”.

Rumi’s love for the Prophet and this homage paid to the Prophet are expressed in several ways. In Mathnavi alone there are numerous sayings of the Prophet which Rumi has quoted and made caption of his verses. “Still is Na’t of Maulana Rumi well known in Turkey and the countries where Rumi’s mystical poetry is read.” Above all, on the meaning of “But for thee, I would not have created heavens”, Rumi asserts that God “bestowed an existence on the heavens” because of His love for the Prophet.

It is however, not incidental that Iqbal acknowledged Rumi as guide. It is worthy of note that all Iqbal’s books were published after 1908, when he had come back from Europe after deeply studying European philosophy and Western way of life. All these books are replete with Iqbal’s love and regards for the Quran and the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) and his respect for Rumi and a guide. In fact, he now appreciated Islam in a much more intensive way than before. In this respect he found a kindred spirit and an illustrious guide in Rumi, whom he has openly acknowledged as such on different places.

Besides, there are other potential reasons for Iqbal’s acceptance of Rumi as his guide. To my mind, Rumi’s own towering position as religious leader, incontestable mystic poet and distinguished thinker are other highly important reasons which impressed Iqbal.

Rumi is regarded as an eminent religious scholar. “The Muslim World has honoured him with the title of Maulwi-i-Ma’navi (the Doctor of Meaning), a religious scholar who is capable of philosophizing, of penetrating into the meaning of physical and spiritual phenomena, and lifting the veil of appearance to peep into the reality behind them.” Undoubtedly, “Rumi as a philosopher of religion stand shoulders above all those Muslim thinkers who are called Hukama in the history of Muslim thought.”

Rumi possesses an incontestable position as a mystic poet. Khalifa Abdul Hakim’s findings are self explanatory. He says that “in the entire range of mystical literature of the whole world, there is none to equal him either in depth or in comprehensiveness and extent. There have been mystics both in the East and the West whose experience in the realm of the spirit may have equalled the spiritual perceptions of Rumi, but their emotional or intuitional side was not matched by an equally clear and powerful intellect.” Again, Rumi is one of those rare saints and mystics whose intellectual fiber and creative moral and social effort is not weakened by subjective emotional experiences unrelated to the realities of everyday life. In him spirituality, nationality, and universal morality have found a healthy synthesis. God, universe, and humanity are embraced in a single all encompassing vision, the vision of creative love.” Dr. R.A. Nicholson expresses his views regarding Rumi’s uniqueness as a mystic poet thus: “In Rumi the Persian mystical genius found its supreme expression. Viewing the vast landscape of the Sufi poetry, we see him standing out as a sublime mountain-peak; the many other poets before and after him are but foot-hills in comparison. The influence of his example, his thought and his language is powerfully felt through all the succeeding centuries; every Sufi after him capable of reading Persian has acknowledged his unchallenged leadership.”

It is probably due to this uniqueness that in Sufi mysticism Rumi “is justly regarded as a supreme master.” Professor E.G. Brown terms him “the most eminent sufi poet whom Persia has produced…”

To Professor A. J. Arberry, “Jalaluddin Rumi has long been recognized as the greatest mystical poet of Islam, and it can well be argued that he is the supreme mystical poet of all mankind.”

Rumi is the highly esteemed as a thinker, not only for his wide scope of thought and profound insight, but also because he is fore-runner of many modern streams of thought. His thought incorporates Voluntarism and Spiritual Pluralism, the two modern trends which remind us of Nietzsche, Schopenhaur, Bergson, Lloyd Morgan, William James and James Ward in the post-Kantian period. Again, in his thought activism, individualism, theory of Emergent Evolution and religious experience are blended into one – a fact which makes him an encyclopaedic thinker. His view of evolution is a greater contribution in the history of philosophical and scientific thought. It has rightly been said of him in this respect, “Neither modern philosophy nor modern science has left him behind. For about a century now the entire philosophical and scientific thought has been dominated by the concept of evolution and it is the evolutionary concept that has been mainly responsible for sabotaging ancient theologies and views of creation, resulting in almost universal skepticism. Theology everywhere has been making an attempt to save the abiding realities and values of religion by accepting universal evolution as an indubitable fact and recasting old beliefs and dogmas. Rumi performed this task six centuries ago in a manner that can offer guidance to all who want to reconcile religion with philosophy and science.

Again, in the field of psychology his thought is equally valuable. Erich From rightly believes that Rumi was: “A man of profound insight into the nature of man. He discussed the nature of the instincts, the power of reason over the instincts, the nature of the self, of consciousness, the unconscious and cosmic consciousness; he discussed the problems of freedom, of certainty, of authority. In all these areas, Rumi has a great deal to say which is important to those concerned with the nature of man.

It is probably why Iqbal says that nobody has taken birth after Rumi as equal to him from the soil of Persia. He beautifully puts it thus:

“No Rumi has taken birth from the orchards of Persia: although the same are the clay and water of Persia and Tabriz, O’Saqi”.

Rather in the whole history of Muslim thought we do not come across any one except Rumi, who combines in him mystic poet, religious leader and thinker of high order. Only Al-Ghazali can be brought into comparison with him. But he does not have that rich combination which we find in Rumi. Besides, Ghazali “reconciled Sufism, with its many unorthodox practices with Islam and grafted mysticism upon its intellectualism.” But Rumi “scorons book-learning and traditional knowledge, and he must have condemned the scientific and philosophical method of Ghazali as alien to the true spirit of Sufism.” Again, “Ghazali can seldom compete with him in ardour and exaltation of feeling, in originality and profundity of thought, or in power and freedom of expression.”

Iqbal’s own criticism on Ghazali may be read with great interest. Iqbal remarks: “Ghazali, finding no hope in analytic thought, moved to mystic experience, and there found an independent content for religion. In this way he succeeded in securing for religion the right to exist independently of science and metaphysics. But the revelation of the total infinite in mystic experience convinced him of the finitude and inconclusiveness of thought and drove him to a line of cleavage between thought and intuition. He failed to see that thought and intuition are organically related and that thought must necessarily stimulate finitude and inconclusiveness because of its alliance with serial time.

In the end, it is important to note that Iqbal’s acceptance of Rumi as a guide does not mean that Iqbal has blindly followed Rumi. Rather, like Aristotle, he excels his guide in some very important respects. His original reflections, his philosophical thinking, and lucid style earn him a distinctive place. Iqbal is regarded with a great respect by scholars, philosophers, and religious leaders for his highly inspiring and dynamic philosophy and prophetic vision. Dr. Schimmel pointedly remarks: “No body will assert that he was a prophet-that would be both wrong from the point of view of history of religions and incompatible with the Islamic dogma of the finality of prophethood—but we may admit that he has been touched by Gabriel’s Wing.

A famous poet Girami, said about Iqbal:

“He did the work of a prophet, though one may not call him a prophet,”

Actually Iqbal “is a disciple who by virtue of his faith, is dyed deep in the spirit of his master.” His return to Rumi is really a return to the heritage of Islam. And to take inspiration and guidance from the heritage is natural. “Much of the material with which a genius builds a master-piece is supplied by the accumulated heritage of the past, embodied in the life and literature of his time and no one can see the full stature of his genius without the study of this heritage.”

Thus, it is the source that Iqbal is returning. If the Mathnavi of Rumi was an interpretation of the Quran for the people of 1300 A.D., the works of Iqbal are interpretation of the Quran to reconstruct religious thought in Islam in the light of modern knowledge of philosophy and science for a people of 20th century. Iqbal himself say:

“Like Rumi in the Harem I called the people to piety. From him I learnt the secrets of life. In olden days when trouble arose he was there. To meet trouble in present times I am here.”

Hazrat Syed Waris Ali Shah(R.A)

Waris Ali name, Makhdoom-Ul-Asfia and Sartaj-Ul-Fuqura titles, was a renowned holy man with a large number of followers, known as Warisi spread all over the country.

Parentage

Born on 1, Ramazan-Ul-Mubarak 1238 Hijri to Qurban Ali Shah, of Syed Hussein family, reaches his ancestor Imam Husain through Imam Mousa Kazim with twenty-six links in the lineage in between. His forefathers migrated from Neshapur five generations ago came to Devah Sheriff in India and settled there.

ROZA SHARIF HAZRAT WARIS ALI SHAH (U.P.)

Early Education

He did not feed on his mother's milk during daytime as an infant; neither did he take it on 10th of Moharram, the Yaum-e-Aashurah (the day Imam Husain, his relatives and friends were killed in Karbala, now in Iraq). His father died when he was three years old and his mother passed away soon after. The grandmother brought him up and sent him to the maktab (school) at the age of five, where he learnt the holy Qu'Oran by heart till he reached seven. "Chosen friends of Allah"

Aulia's are the chosen friends of Allah. They are the one who have drunk from the fountain of eternal life during their lifetime on earth. They are those devotee and sincere bondsman on the earth who remember Allah ceaselessly and spend their life seeing inner purification through endeavor, toil, abstinence and prayer. They are the one who cease to depend on the "creation" and give them selves unto the creator, seeking sustenance from sources unimaginable, attain nearness to the divine light through constant worship and service to humanity. Their journey is endless. They are shore less sea with out any bottom and craving for Allah with out any limits. Each part of their body is completely rid of non-divine influence. Their heart become like a clean mirror reflecting back the reality of things. Their judgment does not err. Being giving the divine light, they see the things in their true perspective. They see every thing including Angles, Souls, Divine Thorns, the "Lohe-e-Mahfooze", the guarded tablet in the seventh Heaven containing records of all events distinct to take place from the beginning to the end of the universe. They see the past, the present and the future before them.

In the Holy Quran Sura "Yunus" Ayat 62 the verse says:-

Behold! Verily on friends of Allah, there is no fear, nor they shall grieve.

Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) has said in Hadith Qudsi quoted below:-

Allah has said " The most value worshiper of my bondsman, seeking my nearness, is the one I have opposed on him; and my servant continues to draws me near Me through the work of supererogation, until I love him. And when I love him, I am his ears so that he hears Me, and his eyes so that he sees Me, and his feet so he walks by Me, I am his hand so that he do work by Me. When he raises his hand in the prayers, I grant his request, when he seeks refuge unto Me, I protect him".

The most Merciful Allah has bestowed powers in them by which whatever Aulia Allah thinks and says become " KUNFA YA KUN" (be and it become). Hundred of people have been declared as dead have been brought to life by these Aulia Akram back to life again. Dead animal and birds has been also restored to life again although their bodies have been deteriorated since long. Thousand have been cured by them with out medicines including those living far away from them. Prophet like Hazrat Easa and Hazrat Moosa would envy their super-natural phenomena. They all are humble followers of Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.) so low before the Prophet how great would be they are. One wonder why people hesitate very much to pay due respect to these great personality, spiritually perfect and enlightened ones------the Saints, who have been laid to rest after their last breath on earth. Such people had a strong feeling that to visit the shrine of a Saint tantamount of a sin of "Shirk".

According to their belief, these Prophet & Saints who have been laid to the rest has gone forever and nothing can be achieved from them. Even their bodies have been eaten up leaving no trace behind the grave. Further they have in their minds as to why should they seek any assistance or fulfillment of their desires from them or from any one else even they have enough of faith on Allah who the giver of Rizq (food), cure (shifa), IIlm (knowledge). No one can deny their on Allah of getting all the things from Him, but do they all the things from Allah. If not, then why not ? Few example and conversation will convince them for change in their approach. To visit the Aulia's (saints) to go to their Mazar (Dargah Sharif), or to kiss their hand, feet's, or their "Chaddar" covering place on their Mazar or even to their request them for grant of wishes (Murad) or to seek their help to solve the problems does amount to Shirk or Bidat. Remember that Saints are alive and alert and have innumerable powers bestowed to them to them by the Grace of Allah even though laid to rest. Similarly, a little bit of more explanation will make people overcome the gross misunderstanding in their minds who are allergic in matter of Shirk and Bidat.

Let us start with the following question:-

a) Is it a Shirk to kiss "Ghilaf" the outwards covering of Kaaba Sharif?
b) Is it a Shirk to kiss "Hajra e Aswad" a stone of Kaaba Sharif?
c) Is it a Shirk to kiss the Holy Quran the book of Allah?
d) Is it a Shirk to kiss Hands and Feet's of parents face?
e) Is it a Shirk to kiss Wife, Children, Parents, Face?
f) Is it a Shirk to kiss Trophy Cup or Award?

Now refer :

(A) "Ghilaf of Kaaba is kissed by the visitors performing Tawaf."
Tears are visible in their eyes when they touch the Ghilaf, their lips utter prayers, their hearts throbs with emotion, through each one known that the "Ghilaf" is made of material prepared by human hands and it costs thousand of Riyals. The cost of the material has absolutely no worth before them but real philosophy behind all these kissing's is the Holy place covered with Ghilaf, through Kaaba itself is built of stone and materials.

(B) "Hajra e Aswad" a stone of Kaaba Sharif and is kissed by the visitors performing Tawaf." Here is saying of Hazrat Umar (R.A.U..) is worth quotation. Addressing the "Hajra e Aswad", He said "O! Hajra e Aswad", I know thy worth is no more than a piece of stone but since the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) kissed thee it becomes binding on me to follow in his foot "steps". It has to be kissed either by lips or by show of hands in case o rush.

(C) "HOLY QURAN" is printed on a piece of paper and has it outer thick cover which looks like a book but is kissed by the deepest reverence and emotion for very fact that right inside the revelation from Allah. People don’t kiss Novels and story books, through they are made of same material.

(D&E) Hands, feet, faces are apparently noting but bones covered by flesh, skin and hairs, but to a kisser it has a different meaning he respect and loves those part of the body of beloved persons.

(F) Apparently, Trophies are made of metals and materials and have some monetary value, but to winner of the reward it becomes priceless article. The feeling of honor, respect and enthusiasm when combined together in the mind of the recipient make him kiss the trophy.

Well to a person who have no inside knowledge of the meaning of these kissing's would thing that all these kissing's are ridiculous ceremony, but to a person with sight all such kissing's are formalities is a matter of love, sentiment, respect and honors. It is thus proved beyond doubt that such kisses do not fall in the category of Shirk or Bidah in any manner.

Likewise, kissing of feet or hand, Chaddar of Holy Saints the friends of Allah, to whom all the reverence is due, does not tantamount to Shirk or Bidat from any arguable angle Regarding request, appeal, Wishes, or desires to be granted by Saints also cannot be rightly termed as "Shirk or Bidat" for the very reason that people do request their friends relatives, parents, their bosses, government official and higher up pleading for help. Do the convinced persons not file Mercy Petition to the Head of the State to save their lives? Though the life and death is in hands of Allah? Do not the children, even the grown ups request or demand that religion so rigid that at every step they issue fatwas, especially ruling about "Shirk or Bidat". May Allah guide and make them realistic and sensible in their approach particularly in the manner of faith.

Allah is the prime source, the acts of Aulia-the enlightened Saints, are nothing the attribute of Allah channeled through them.

“AULIA ALLAH”

Some erroneous type of concept of many people has been developed towards the acknowledgment of Aulia (Saints) in the religion of Islam. Some of them do not know about the reality of this magnificence Aulia Akram (Holy Saints) and some of them say that, These Sufis and Saints are baseless since there is not any type of Zikr in Quran and Hadith. For both the type of communities, ALLAH ALL MIGHTY and HIS PROPHET MUHAMMED (S.A.W.) has delineate by giving orders in the Holy Quran and Sunnah.

In the Holy Quran;

LA ILLAHA ILLAL LA HO WAHDAHO LASHARIQA LAHO, ALLAH revealed:
Behold! Verily on the friends Of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve;

those who believe and (Constantly) guard against evil. For them is Glad Tiding, in the life of the Present, And in the Hereafter: No change can there be in the Words of Allah .
This is indeed. The supreme Felicity. [10:62]

In another words Allah have revealed in the Holy Quran:-
None one can be its guardian except Al-Muttagun (The pious, Saints)
But most of them know not [ 8:34 ]

Allah declares that:
"Verily, he who has purified the Nafs has attained victory,
and he who has despoiled it has lost.

Allah also states that:
"That day of Qiyamat (the day of doom) neither wealth nor sons will benefit anyone, but that person who comes to Allah with a reformed hearts".

Through these Surrahs reference of Holy Quran it is undoubtedly defined that Aulia Allah (Saints) are not erroneous but also ALL MIGHTY ALLAH keeps them His comrade. Also Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.) has briefly clarified this issue of Aulia Akram (Saints) in Hadith.

Hazrat Saad Bin Abe Waqas (R.A) has narrated that, Once Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.) said that "Allah alleviates the nations but through His devotees friends".

In this Hadith which is narrated by Hazrat Saad Bin Abe Waqas (R.A.), Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.) has defined that Allah helps the nation as a sum or individually only because of His friends which are Aulia Akram (Saints).

Hazrat Eabad (R.A.) has narrated that once Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.) said that" In MY nation there are forty Abdals (devotees) because of whom the system of the world exists. Cause of them rainfalls and due to them you are helped.

Hazrat Annas (R.A.) narrates that once Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W.) said that "This world will not remain vacant from forty Abdals (devotees). Those who will be from the grandsons and nation of Hazrat Abraham (A.S.) and due to them you will be helped.

All the authentic principals of Aulia Akram (Saints) are to be found in the Holy Quran and Hadith. This clearly untrue the saying, that Aulia Allah (Saints) are baseless or flawed and since there is not any Zikr of these Sufis and Saints in Holy Quran and Hadith is absolutely erroneous and against the teaching of Quran & Hadith. Even though, Allah and His propitiate Prophet Mohammed ((S.A.W.)) have explicitly defined about these enormous celebrities. As we can see that these Aulia Akram are the major part of Islam and also they are one the most lightened path for the true believers and followers.

LIFE HISTORY

Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganj-e-Shaka R.A. was born on the 29th Shaban in 569 A.H. [April 4, 1179 C.E.] in Khotwal, a village near Lahore [Pakistan]. He was a direct descendant of Hazrat Umar Farooq R.A., the second Caliph of Islam.

It is narrated that a miracle occurred before his birth proving his Saint ship. One day, during the pregnancy of his mother, she wanted to pluck some plums from her neighbor's tree without his permission, but the child in her womb (Hazrat Baba Farid) created a severe pain in her stomach that forced her to abandon the idea of plucking. After a few years after Hazrat Baba Farid’s R.A. birth, his mother lovingly expressed: “My dear son, during your confinement I never ate anything which was unlawful.” Hazrat Baba Farid R.A., however, smiled and said, “But, my dear mother, you wanted to pluck some plums from our neighbor's tree without his permission when I had created a severe pain in your stomach which saved you from this unlawful act.”

After he had completed his early religious education at the age of 7 in Khotwal, his mother sent him for higher education to Multan. Here he stayed in a masjid [mosque] where he learnt the Holy Qur'an by heart and studied Hadith, Fiqh, Philosophy and Logic under the tutorship of Maulana Minhajuddin.

During his studies, Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Baktiar Kaki R.A. of Delhi visited Multan where Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. became his Murid (disciple) in the Chishtiyya Silsila. Upon the instructions of his Pir-o-Murshid, he undertook a tour of Islamic countries, for about 18 years from 593 A.H. to 611 A.H. [1196 C.E. to 1214 C.E.] he travelled to Ghazni, Baghdad Sharif, Jerusalem, Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Mecca and Medina meeting many great saints and Sufis. After the demise of Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin R.A. the mantle of spiritual leadership in the Chishtia Silsila fell on the shoulders of Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. when Khwaja Qutbuddin R.A.nominated him to be his Khalifa or spiritual successor.

It is narrated that when Hazrat Baba Farid R.A.visited Medina Sharif he was spiritually commanded by the Holy Prophet S.A.W. to visit Baghdad Sharif and meet Hazrat Abdul Wahab, son of Hazrat Ghaus-al-Azam Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani R.A. He was to receive some sacred relics from him. Accordingly, when he reached Baghdad Sharif, he received a box from Hazrat Abdul Wahab R.A. which contained the following holy relics: Two flag-poles which were used by the Holy Prophet S.A.W. in some of the battles fought by him; one wooden bowl in which the Prophet S.A.W. used to eat from; one pair of scissors and one turban which was used by the holy Prophet S.A.W.

Because of political upheavals in Delhi, he was obliged to shift the centre of the Chishtiyya mission from Delhi to Ajodhan now known as "Pak Patan". The Khanqah of Baba Farid R.A., with his patronage, became a great university of "moral and spiritual training." Thousands of aspirants, scholars, dervishes and Sufis reaped benefit from this spiritual university. Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. reached the pinnacle of spiritual glory through extremely hard Mujahidas (spiritual striving) to gain mastery over the Nafs.

Once Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin R.A. ordered Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. to perform the "Chilla-e-Maakoos" for 40 days. This chilla was seldom undertaken by Sufis and was one of the most difficult tests of Hazrat Khwaja Baba Farid's R.A. faith and courage. It was to be performed in a well by hanging himself in a reverse or headlong position with his feet tied up by a rope to a sturdy branch of a treetop.

Once, due to utter weakness, Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. helped himself to walk with the aid of a staff. But after a few steps, the colour of his face suddenly became purple, as if he was under heavy punishment. He threw away the staff. When Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin R.A., who was escorting him, enquired the reason for this, Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. replied, “I wanted to take help of the staff, but Allah’s Displeasure frowned upon me for depending on other’s help instead of His. I, therefore, threw away the staff and felt highly ashamed of this weakness in my faith in Rabb, the Almighty.”

It is also narrated that once a trader was taking a caravan of camels laden with sugar from Multan to Delhi. When he was passing through Ajodhan (now Pakistan), Hazrat Baba Fariduddin R.A. enquired casually as to what he was carrying on his camels. The trader sarcastically replied, "It is salt." Hazrat Baba Fariduddin R.A. also affirmed, "Yes, it may be salt." When the trader reached Delhi, he was awfully perturbed to find that all his bags of sugar had turned to salt. He immediately returned to Ajodhan and apologized before Hazrat Baba Farid R.A.. Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. said: "If it is sugar then it shall be sugar." The trader returned to Delhi and was pleased to find that the salt had turned back to sugar by the Grace of Almighty Allah. This is how Hazrat Baba Sahib R.A. received the title of "Ganj-e- Shakar."

One of the devotees of Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. named Mohammed Nishapuri lived in Gujerat and was going to Delhi with three other companions. On their way through the jungle, robbers encountered them. Mohammed Nishapuri and his companions had no wepons to defend themselves. In such a helpless state, Mohammed Nishapuri remembered his Pir, Hazrat Baba Farid R.A., and also offered prayers seeking Allah's help in their predicament. Surpassingly, the robbers threw away their weapons and offered an apology to the party and went away.

One day some poor people came from Arabia to see Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. and said that they were strangers to the land and that all their money was spent before the end of the journey. Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. gave them some dried dates which were lying in front of him at the moment and said, “Take them and go. Your journey shall be completed by the Grace of Allah.” Apparently, these persons were very disappointed with such a "cheap gift". After leaving the Khanqah, they wanted to throw away the dates, but just as they were about to do so, to their amazement, the dates turned into gold. Regretting their thoughts, these people left happily uttering their heartfelt gratitude and prayers for Hazrat Baba Farid R.A.

He fasted throughout his life and maintained his nightly prayers and devotions. Fear of Allah always dominated him. He was a staunch devotee of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. and dedicated his entire life to the veneration of the beloved Prophet's S.A.W. immortal glory. At the mention of the Holy Prophet's S.A.W. character he would often weep out of his love and devotion. Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. avoided kings, government officials and the rich. He also warned his Khalifas, devotees and Murids to avoid their company. He was a living picture of humility. Whatever he received was spent in the name of Allah and his chest overwhelmed with mercy and forgiveness. Many miracles are attributed to him during his lifetime and after his passing away.

On the 5th of Muharram, during the Isha prayer [evening prayer] ] while in the act of Sajdah, [prostration during prayer] he uttered "Ya Hayo Ya Qayum" [O Self-Subsisting, O Eternal -- two names of God] and with these words on his lips his soul disappeared into the eternal bliss of his beloved Allah. Immediately a "Nida" or Divine Voice declared: "Dost ba Dost Pewast" - Friend has merged into the unity of "Friend" (Allah).

An old woman that was one of the devotees of the Saint presented a piece of cloth for the kaffan [shroud] of Hazrat Baba Farid R.A.. She implored: “I have not spun even a single thread of this cloth without having Wudu [purification]. I had prepared it for my own coffin but if it is accepted for the kaffan of this great Saint, I feel confident, Allah would be pleased with to pardon my sins and grant me salvation.” Hazrat Baba Farid’s R.A. son accepted this cloth as the Kaffan.

His Mazar Sharif [noble shrine] is in Pak Patan, Pakistan. Hazrat Sabir Pak, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and Hazrat Jamaluddin Hansi rehmatulla alaihim [may Allah have mercy upon them] are among his favourite Murids and Khalifas. It is generally recognized that he had three wives and many children. Hazrat Baba Farid R.A. was indeed one of the most brilliant stars of the Chishtia Silsila and is held in high esteem by one and all.

Khwaja Nizamuddin Aulia constructed his tomb. Mazar has two doors, namely Noori darwaza and Bahishti darwaza. Bahishti darwaza opens once a year and during the fair thousands of people pass through it. It (door) is made of silver and floral designs are laid in gold sheet. Thousands of devotees come to visit the shrine daily from within the country and from abroad. His urs (death anniversary) is celebrated every year on the 5th, 6th and 7th of Muharram. His verses have been collected in GURU GRANTH SAHIB under the chapter Farid's Sayings by GURU NANAK DEV JI.
